Mobility Equipment Funding: NDIS, Support at Home & DVA

In short: There are three main ways to fund mobility equipment in Australia: the NDIS (if you are under 65 and a participant), the Support at Home program through its Assistive Technology and Home Modifications scheme (if you are older and receiving aged care support), and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (for eligible veterans and war widows or widowers). Most funded equipment needs an occupational therapist to assess you and prescribe it. If none of these apply, you can self-fund, and we will always give you a clear quote first. Whichever path you are on, we offer a free assessment and a personalised suitability test, and we work alongside your OT. Call 1300 225 203.

Working out which funding is right for you

Funding for a lift recliner chair, adjustable bed, mobility scooter or walker usually comes down to your age and situation. As a rough guide, the NDIS is for people under 65 living with a disability, the Support at Home program is for older Australians receiving aged care at home, and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs looks after eligible veterans. Many people are not sure which one they fall under, and that is completely normal. We help families untangle this every week, and your occupational therapist or aged care provider can confirm exactly where you sit.

NDIS funding for mobility equipment

If you are an NDIS participant, mobility equipment is funded as assistive technology under your plan. As a general guide, low-cost items can often be purchased without a formal assessment when they are reasonable and necessary, while higher-cost items such as a made-to-measure lift recliner chair or a powered scooter usually need an assistive technology assessment, generally from an occupational therapist, along with a quote. We are happy to provide compliant quotes and to work directly with your OT and plan manager so the paperwork is straightforward. The key is that the item is tied to your goals and your assessed need, which is exactly what a good OT assessment sets out.

Support at Home and the AT-HM scheme

For older Australians, the Support at Home program replaced Home Care Packages on 1 November 2025. Mobility equipment is now funded through its Assistive Technology and Home Modifications scheme, usually called AT-HM. Instead of drawing the cost from your general care budget, assistive technology is funded through separate tiers based on how complex and costly the item is. As a guide, there is a lower tier for simple, everyday aids, a medium tier for equipment that needs some clinical evidence, and a higher tier of around fifteen thousand dollars or more for complex or higher-cost items, which need formal approval. An occupational therapist prescribes anything on the prescribed part of the list, and the assessment, prescription and setup are wrapped into the support. Your registered provider manages the funding and any contribution you make. Because the exact tier amounts are set by the government and were updated in July 2026, your provider or OT will confirm the current figure for your situation, and we will make sure the equipment we quote fits the tier and the list.

Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA)

If you hold a DVA Gold Card, or a White Card for an accepted condition, you may be eligible for mobility equipment through the Rehabilitation Appliances Program. This also generally works through a health professional such as an occupational therapist, who assesses your needs and arranges the item. We are glad to work with your DVA provider and supply what is needed.

If you are self-funding

Plenty of our customers simply pay for their equipment themselves, often because they want it sorted quickly without waiting on an assessment, or because they do not qualify for a program. That is absolutely fine, and it is often faster. We will give you a clear, itemised quote before anything is ordered, with no pressure to buy, and you are welcome to try everything first in our Cheltenham showroom or with a free in-home demonstration.

How we make funding easy

Whichever path you are on, we take the time to get it right. We offer a free assessment and a personalised suitability test, we work alongside your occupational therapist on the measurements and clinical justification, and we provide clear, compliant quotes for the NDIS, Support at Home or DVA. If you are not sure where to start, call us for a friendly chat and we will point you in the right direction, even if that is simply telling you who to speak to first.

Common questions

Does the NDIS pay for a lift recliner chair?

It can. For NDIS participants, a lift recliner chair is funded as assistive technology when it is reasonable and necessary and tied to your goals. Higher-cost chairs generally need an assistive technology assessment, usually from an occupational therapist, plus a quote, which we are happy to provide.

How is mobility equipment funded under Support at Home?

Since 1 November 2025, mobility equipment for older Australians is funded through the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) scheme under Support at Home. Items are funded in tiers based on cost and complexity, an occupational therapist prescribes anything on the prescribed list, and your registered provider manages the funding.

Do I need an occupational therapist to get funding?

For most funded equipment, yes. An OT assesses your needs, prescribes the right item and provides the clinical justification that the NDIS, Support at Home or DVA require. We work alongside your OT, and we also offer a free assessment and suitability test of our own.

Can I get mobility equipment through DVA?

If you hold a DVA Gold Card, or a White Card for an accepted condition, you may be eligible through the Rehabilitation Appliances Program, generally arranged by a health professional such as an OT. We are happy to work with your DVA provider.

What if I do not qualify for any funding?

You can self-fund, which is often the fastest option. We give you a clear, itemised quote before anything is ordered, with no pressure, and you can try everything first in our showroom or with a free in-home demo.

How long does funded equipment take?

It depends on the assessment and approval, which the funding body and your OT control. Once an item is approved and ordered, we deliver and install it, normally within 2 to 5 business days for our in-stock range. Made-to-order items such as a Configura Comfort take longer, and we give you a clear timeframe up front.
